Six Simple Steps

How long does it take

To have a denture made?

1st Appointment: Stocks Impressions

Moulds of your mouth will be taken in order to create a denture that’s tailored to you.

2nd Appointment: Custom Impressions

It is protocol to take 2nd impressions with a custom tray made to fit only your mouth.

In order to give us a more accurate mold of your mouth.

3rd Appointment: Registering your ‘bite’ (centric jaw relation)

Everyone’s “bite” is unique and your clinician will work with you to create a comfortable and efficient “bite” that will meet your needs to function with and to compliment the shape of your face. During this appointment you will have wax ’blocks’ in your mouth that will be measured and adjusted to meet the requirement of your bite.

At the same appointment the size, shape and colour of your teeth maybe chosen.

4th Appointment: Trying in your denture: Where you are encouraged to give us your opinion

At this appointment the teeth that you choose will be set in wax for you to try in to ensure that you and your clinician are happy and comfortable with the look of your teeth and to check that you are biting in a position that is suitable for the function of your mouth. You should participate actively in this appointment.

Make sure you  are happy with the colour, shape of the teeth and that you are happy with the changes the denture may have on your face ie: position of lips. Tell the prosthetist at this appointment if you want something changed. Ask questions if you are unsure about something as the denture will be sent away for processing which sets all the teeth into the position you have approved. You can involve your family or carer to get a second opinion on how they look if this makes you more comfortable. This is the last appointment where things can be changed.

5th Appointment: Trying in your denture

Your finished denture will be fitted into your mouth. The clinician will check that all is as it should be and make any minor adjustments to the bite and fit if required. You should participate actively in this appointment if something does not fee/ right. You will need to tell the clinician so that they can adjust the denture to make if fit better.

6th Appointment: Adjustments/Follow up review appointments

Often your denture may require an adjustment after you have worn it for a period of time.

The prosthetist may book you an appointment for this adjustment or ask you to contact the clinic if you have a problem.
